Cataract is the most common disease affecting the elderly. It occurs in 70% of persons older than 75 years. It is a natural consequence of the aging process eventually leading to the blurring of the eye lens. In some cases, the initial cataract vision can be improved by glasses since the swelling of the lenses causes miopisation (minus diopter) in the eye, but with time and progression of the blurring of the lens the glasses can no longer be useful, and the only treatment option left is cataract surgery.
